Components of the POWER-Solving® Curriculum

There are currently two levels of the POWER-Solving® Program: Child (approximately grades K-6) and Adolescent (approximately grades 7-12). Each level includes a Student Workbook and Facilitator’s Guide. Each curriculum level and its components may be purchased separately or bundled together as part of a comprehensive package.

The authors have also created My POWER-ful Day, which is a child-friendly book that has been used for individuals in grades K-12 as an introduction to POWER-Solving.

Below are the critical components that comprise the POWER-Solving® Program:

  • Facilitator’s Guide: an easy to follow guide that includes the POWER-Solving® curriculum to teach the 5 POWER-Solving® steps. This guide provides the program administrator with pertinent information and clear guidelines to effectively implement the curriculum, thereby increasing treatment integrity and efficacy. Click here to read sample pages from the Facilitator’s Guide to Child Workbook: Introduction now.
  • Activities and strategies are included in the Facilitator’s Guides and Workbooks to promote the generalization of learned skills across settings, including the school, home, and community.
  • Screening and ongoing assessment tools (e.g., POWER-Solving® Rating Scale) assist facilitators in evaluating each participant’s performance level and identifying their strengths and needs. These tools also help facilitators determine appropriate social situations to which they can apply the POWER-Solving® Curriculum.
  • The user-friendly Child and Adolescent versions of the POWER-Solving® Workbook include the POWER-Solving® curriculum to teach the 5 POWER-Solving® steps. Activities and strategies are included to promote the generalization of learned skills across settings, including school, home, and the community.   • Student self-monitoring checklists are included in the Facilitator’s Guides and the Workbooks.
  • A sample letter is included in the Facilitator Guides which can be used to inform families about the POWER-Solving® curriculum.
  • The POWER-Solving® curriculum includes various modules which represent common social situations that children and adolescents experience. These modules are contained in separate Facilitator Guides and Workbooks. They also include activities and strategies to promote generalization of learned skills across settings.

While it is most critical for the child and adolescent to learn the POWER-Solving® Steps first (i.e., the “toolbox”), by completing the POWER-Solving® Introduction Workbook and accompanying Facilitator Guide first, the facilitator can determine the sequence of the subsequent modules. For example, one may prefer to move to the Anger Management module after the Introduction. Alternatively, one may decide to move to Social Conversation or Developing Friendships.

Stepping Stones to Solving Life’s Everyday Social Problems

  • POWER-Solving®: Stepping Stones to Solving Life’s Everyday Social Problems is designed to teach children and adolescents to become independent problem-solvers via a hands-on, user-friendly, positive-practice, interactive approach.
  • Through the use of child- and adolescent-friendly, engaging materials, which rely heavily on visual cues and supports, participants gain the “tools” necessary to successfully problem-solve – tools they can use to solve various challenging social situations at school, home and in the community.
  • POWER-Solving® is a carefully thought-out and tested tool for teaching students the critical skills they need. It has been applied successfully in classrooms, summer programs, clinical settings and home environments.
